INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the demonstration versions of LogoVista E to J for Power Macintosh and 680X0-based Macintosh computers. This unique translation software:
Ñ automates the translation of English text into Japanese, producing accurate drafts quickly and ensuring that terminology is used consistently.
Ñ can be used to translate a wide variety of documents, including product manuals, technical articles, and business correspondence.
Ñ significantly reduces the time and cost involved in producing Japanese translations.
LogoVista E to J is available for both 680X0 processor-based and PowerPC¬ processor-based Macintosh computers. Depending on the length and complexity of the sentences being translated, LogoVista E to J running on a Power Macintosh 6100/60 (with a 60 MHz PowerPC 601 processor) translates two to four times faster than LogoVista E to J running on a Quadra 840AV (with a 40 MHz 68040 processor). Because of the speed of Power Macintosh systems, the features of LogoVista E to J that govern the tradeoff between translation speed and accuracy may never need to be used.
DESCRIPTION OF LOGOVISTA E TO J
Language Engineering Corporation╒s team of linguists and software engineers has developed LogoVista E to J based on the most advanced linguistic expertise available today. The system features:
Ñ a parser which analyzes English sentences, determining the syntactic relationships among words.
Ñ semantic processing that chooses the most likely translation in a given context.
Ñ a Japanese synthesizer that creates well-written Japanese output.
Ñ a set of dictionaries with more than 660,000 entries.
The richly annotated LogoVista Dictionary contains more than 120,000 entries which cover the core vocabulary of English. Twenty-one optional technical dictionaries contain more than 540,000 specialized terms from business, science, and technology. You can also create, browse, and edit your own dictionaries.
LogoVista E to J can translate text both automatically (without any guidance from the user) and interactively. When used interactively, the system records the choices the you make and uses the information to improve future translations. As you interact with LogoVista E to J, the accuracy of its translations improves.
LogoVista E to J can import English text files in ASCII format and export Japanese text files in SJIS format for use with Japanese word processing and desktop publishing software.
Major Features:
Ñ The Alternate Word command displays a list of alternate translations for an individual word. LogoVista E to J records the choices you make with the Alternate Word feature and uses this information to improve future translations.
Ñ The Alternate Translation command enables you to choose an alternate translation for a word, phrase, or entire sentence interactively.
Ñ The Translate Selection command translates only selected sentences.
Ñ The commands on the Part of Speech menu allow you to guide the translation by setting the part of speech for a word or phrase.
Ñ The Accuracy versus Speed control enables you to choose the optimum balance between speed and accuracy for your needs.
Ñ Tools for creating, editing, and managing user dictionaries, including features for converting existing glossaries in text format into user dictionaries and for converting user dictionaries back into text format glossaries.
Ñ Translation Memory Archives for storing and reusing your preferred translations for entire sentences.
Ñ LogoVista E to J gives you the ability to rank the LogoVista dictionary, multiple technical dictionaries, and multiple user dictionaries in order of priority. The system will give preference to the translation found in the highest-ranked dictionary.

HOW TO USE THE DEMONSTRATION VERSION OF LOGOVISTA E TO J
LogoVista E to J requires either System 7.1 or later and the Japanese Language Kit, or KanjiTalk 7.1 or later to display Japanese characters. You can run the demonstration version of LogoVista E to J on a U.S. System if you do not have the Japanese Language Kit, but Japanese characters will not be displayed properly. A minimum RAM partition of 5MB is required; a RAM partition of 10MB or more is recommended. On a Macintosh with a total of 8MB RAM, you should enable virtual memory through the Memory Control Panel in order to run LogoVista E to J.
NOTE: If you are using System 7.1.2, you must install the ObjectSupportLib extension in the Extensions folder inside your System folder before running the demo. Drag the ObjectSupportLib extension from the "ObjectSupportLib-System 7.1.2" folder which is inside the LogoVista E to J folder to your System folder. When you are asked if you would like the extension placed in your Extensions folder, click OK. Then restart your Macintosh before running the demo.
The LogoVista E to J folder contains the LogoVista E to J 2.5 demo application, a Dictionaries folder, English and Japanese AppleGuide files, and two ReadMe files. You can either run the LogoVista E to J demo directly from the CD-ROM, or copy the LogoVista E to J folder onto your hard disk and run the demo from there. For the best performance, we recommend copying the demo onto your hard disk before running it. (The demo will run twice as fast from your hard disk as it will from the CD-ROM.) The LogoVista E to J folder requires 27MB of disk space.
To start the demonstration system, double-click the LogoVista E to J 2.5 icon. The LogoVista E to J main window will appear. The left half of the main window is the English input text box; the right half of the window is the Japanese output text box. You can change the language of the user interface by choosing ╥English╙ or ╥Japanese╙ from the Options menu (the second menu from the right). If you need help identifying features, Balloon Help is available in both English and Japanese.
For the quickest way to see how LogoVista E to J translates English text, open one of the demonstration texts included with this demo by using the Open command on the File menu. Select one of the eight texts listed and click OK. The text you have chosen will appear in a new LogoVista E to J document window. Alternatively, you can type English text directly into the English input text box.
To translate the English text, choose the Translate command to translate the English text automatically. Choose the Alternate Translation command to have the option of viewing alternate translations for all or part of a sentence. After a word has been translated, you can select it in either of the text boxes in the main window and use the Alternate Word command on the Translate menu to view a list of alternate translations and select an appropriate one.
If you would like to adjust some of the settings which govern the translation process, select Translation Options from the Options menu and set options such as the speed of the translation, the formality level of the Japanese translation (Informal, Formal, or Polite), and the language in which proper names are displayed (Japanese, English, or both). Select Layout Options from the Options menu to choose either Formatted layout (the basic formatting of the English input is duplicated in the Japanese output) or Side by Side layout (corresponding English and Japanese sentences are aligned).
NOTE: System 7.5 users can also access AppleGuide files that give step-by-step instructions for using LogoVista E to J. Choose the LogoVista Guide file from the Guide menu on right side of the menu bar. The Japanese-language version of the file ("LogoVista E to J âKâCâh") is available by default. If you are running the demo from your hard drive, you can access the English-language version of the file ("LV E to J Guide") by dragging the Japanese version of the file out of the LogoVista E to J folder and restarting the demo.
The demonstration version of LogoVista E to J does not have all the features of the complete system; some features have been disabled. The differences between the demonstration system and the complete system are:
Ñ The demonstration version can be run directly from the CD-ROM on which it is delivered. The complete system must be installed on your hard drive and requires 30MB of hard disk space.
Ñ Files cannot be imported into the demonstration system for translation. Enter English text to be translated with the keyboard, or open one of the eight demonstration texts included with the demo by using the Open command on the File menu.
Ñ No more than 1,000 characters can be entered into the English input text box at any one time. Each sentence can be no more than twenty words in length (each punctuation mark and carriage return is counted as a word). Both of these restrictions are lifted for the eight demonstration texts. These eight texts may not be edited, however. The complete system, by contrast, translates sentences up to 120 words in length and places no limit on the number of characters in a document.
Ñ A sample user dictionary is included with the demonstration system. This dictionary is automatically loaded when you open one of the eight demonstration texts. You can browse this user dictionary, but you cannot modify it.
Ñ Files cannot be saved.
Ñ The Japanese translation cannot be printed.
Ñ The Cut, Copy, and Paste commands on the Edit menu have been disabled. Delete text by using the Delete key or the Clear command on the Edit menu.
Ñ LogoVista E to J technical dictionaries and translation memory archives cannot be loaded.
Ñ The demonstration system does not store information about how you modify translations with the Alternate Word command.
